The department has been staffed with 24/7 PA coverage for more than 15 years. There is MD/DO Family Practice coverage available continuously by telephone and able to arrive in the department within 20-30 minutes, but they are not on site. They are one of several small hospitals in rural Maine that continue to staff with a PA based model.
We are looking for a full-time physician assistant who is ready and able to work in this challenging environment. The ideal candidate will have good independent thinking skills and the ability to multi task. He/She will need to be comfortable with a wide range of presenting complaints, from respiratory failure requiring intubation to acute MI with thrombolytic use to little kids with runny noses. We require ACLS, BLS, and PALS certification, and encourage current training in ATLS.
In general, the PAs work a schedule of three shifts a week 7a-7p or 7p-7a. This is a blend of 12 hour day shifts and 14 hour night shifts, for a total of 26 hours of coverage daily. We place a high value on how well a potential candidate will fit with the team of other providers, and contribute to our ongoing work in the department and the hospital on service excellence to our customer patients and their families. You will be an employee of the hospital, not a private group.
Full employment includes participation in a robust spectrum of ancillary benefits. The critical issue for most PA’s, is the fact that they will be THE ED provider when they are working. They are not ancillary to the physician, deferring the sickest folks to the doc. They take care of all, and it is the sickest ones who need the most immediate intervention to save life or limb.
